How Important Is Fiber Type in Carpets?
The fiber is the essence of the carpet; each fiber type adds a different texture and richness of color to the carpet. Each fiber has its own unique properties, and to best showcase these properties, it's essential to choose the right fiber for the right area.
Wool carpets are more durable than others. They retain their original appearance for a long time, even in high-traffic areas. Woven from natural materials, these carpets resist matting and soiling. In carpets made with high-wool-content fibers, the luster increases with use. Carpets woven from wool fiber are resistant to pressure. Thanks to these properties, wool carpets do not get crushed under the weight of furniture, and indentations do not form on them. Additionally, carpets woven with wool fiber, with their high moisture content, protein content, and spiral curled structure, create tiny air holes that help balance room temperature. This means both natural insulation and higher fire resistance for the carpet.
Another fiber type that increases carpet durability is Polyamide fiber. Carpets woven with polyamide fiber, like wool carpets, are resistant to the weight and movement of furniture and can maintain their original appearance for a long time. They are also resistant to moisture. Carpets that combine wool and polyamide fibers offer a pleasant appearance, as well as the comfort of wool and the durability of polyamide.
Acrylic fibers, resistant to matting and abrasion, and durable against moisture, provide the closest look and feel to wool with their voluminous and flexible structures. They are lower priced than wool carpets and offer more color options.
Polyester and polypropylene fibers are less resistant to pressure compared to others. If you have furniture on carpets containing these fibers, you should change their positions at regular intervals.
What is Viscose?
Viscose is obtained from beech trees and, like cotton, is composed of cellulose. Beech trees grow naturally in Europe, Asia, America, Japan, and Turkey.
It is the most important and most commonly used semi-synthetic fiber among cellulose-based regenerated fibers. Since it resembles natural silk, it can be used instead of natural silk in applications that do not require high durability. The term artificial silk/rayon is used synonymously with viscose. It is obtained from trees grown in industrial forests. Due to its natural cellulosic structure, it should be used in areas with low traffic.
